Short history review on Sozopol, Black sea

Sozopol is the oldest city on the Bulgarian sea side and is established in 610 b. c. Today Sozopol is a beautiful resort with vast sand beaches, yacht harbor and what this blog is about - interesting architecture.

On the territory of Sozopol there are three small islands situated not far from the city – “Saint Tomas”, “Saint Ivan” and “Saint Stefan” islands. Very picturesque are the dunes of the beaches Alepu, Kavacite and Gerena with their interesting shapes and vegetation.

Sozopol is situated on 35 kilometers south from the city of Burgas, which is an important today and as well beautiful city on Black sea with big harbor, airport and train station.

But history goes back as sub aquatic researches at the harbour of Sozopol show remains of residential buildings, stone and bone instruments of labour and pottery since the bronze period. Actually the first village is founded by Greeks from Milet with the name of Apolonia Pontika at the end of the ІV – ІІІ millennium b. c.

In 72 b. c. the city is conquered and robbed by the Romans and the fortress wall is destroyed. 5 centuries later in ІV century a. c. the city is again gaining strength this time with the name Sozopolis – city of salvage. But from that period are the remains of the fortress walls.

Many of the old houses and churches that create the memorable looks and feel of the city of Sozopol today are build in XVIII – XIX century.

A famous symbol of Sozopol is the anchor which stands for the meaning of the harbor and the commerce. This symbol is found on the coins Apolonia cuts at the end of VI century b. c. Due to the well developed trade the city became center of high cultivated taste for art.

The harbor of Sozopol has a regional meaning. There are many yacht ports and docks for fish boats in the town of Sozopol, Chernomorec village, The Atia bay and near the vacation village Duni.

Today the city is growing fast and it’s development has intrigued us to publish this blog.
